The Twin Cities Preferred Radiant Flooring Contractor

Radiant floor heating is the silent hero of home heating. Because the heat emanates from the floor, radiant flooring is efficient and quiet. As the waves of thermal radiation rise from below, they warm all objects in a room, which then radiate that heat. Silver Tree Plumbing & Htg LLC is a leading radiant flooring contractor in Dakota County. We provide complete radiant floor installation, maintenance and repair services. Contact Silver Tree Plumbing & Heating to speak with a knowledgeable technician about radiant heating for your home.

How Do Radiant Floors Work?

Radiant floor heating uses hot-water tubes or electric wires buried beneath the floor. The heat waves rise and warm objects in the room. You stay warm, because these objects have their own heat and aren’t taking yours. With conventional forced-air heat, air blows from registers at a temperature of 120 degrees Fahrenheit, where it rises to the top of the room, then drops back down as it cools. This is why your toes can be cold while your head stays warm. Forced-air heating systems also cycle. Your furnace heats to the designated temperature, then shuts off. This cycle repeats, making the temperature in your home uneven. Radiant floors produce even, constant, efficient heat. Radiant flooring can be installed under finished flooring such as hardwood and tile. Carpet is not recommended as it stifles the heat.

Electric Radiant Heat

Electric radiant heat uses electric resistance cables beneath the flooring. Electric floors are generally not used as a home’s main source of heat, as the price of electricity is not cost-effective. This type of floor heat is used as supplemental heat in bathrooms and additions. We recommend programmable thermostats to minimize energy costs. The electric cables are built into the floor or pre-attached to mats and installed over a subfloor in a bed of thin-set mortar. If removing your existing flooring isn’t an option, you can choose to have electric radiant pads installed in joist bays under the subfloor.

Hydronic Radiant Heat

Hydronic radiant heat systems are used to heat an entire house. A boiler or water heater heats water to between 100 and 120 degrees Fahrenheit which is circulated through tubing beneath the floors.
PEX tubing is used, as copper and metal corrode over time. Flexible PEX tubing can be installed on top of the subfloor in grooved panels or snap-in grids, clipped into aluminum strips on the underside of the floor or embedded in poured concrete.
